WITNESS SOUGHT IN SHOOTING: Berkeley police are trying to identify a suspect -- and a witness -- in a shooting near the UC Berkeley campus.

The shooting happened on the 2100 block of Kittredge Street about 3:35 a.m. Thursday.

Police say the intended target was a 39-year-old homeless man who was not hit by the gunfire.

The man said he was standing in front of a building when the assailant opened fire at him from a parking lot near the Touchless Car Wash across the street, police said.

The shooter is described as a black or dark-skinned man, 6 feet to 6 feet 3 inches tall, thin build, wearing a black T-shirt with a design on the front, chain around his neck, dark colored "bucket" hat, tan pants and white shoes.

The assailant fled south on Fulton Street and west on Bancroft Way.

Police obtained surveillance video showing a man walking past the car wash at the time of the shooting. Investigators want to talk to him and are asking anyone who recognizes him to call them at (510) 981-5741.

TEEN CHARGED AS ADULT IN HOLDUP SPREE: One of four teenage suspects in a Millbrae car-wash holdup -- arrested in dramatic fashion on a Fremont freeway -- has been charged as an adult, prosecutors said today.

Jose Daniel Alcantar-Ortega, 17, of San Leandro has been charged by San Mateo County prosecutors with numerous robbery counts.

The incident began when a 31-year-old woman was at the Millbrae Car Wash at 310 Adrian Road about 2 p.m. Thursday.

A man pushed her to the ground, pointed a handgun at her and stole her purse and electronic devices, according to the San Mateo County sheriff's office. The robber fled in a white Honda Civic that was later determined to have been stolen.

Fremont police caught up to the Honda about an hour later and began chasing it. The pursuit ended in a crash on Interstate 880, and four juveniles in the car were arrested. A gun and the car-wash victim's purse was found in the car.

Authorities say the four targeted women, stealing their purses at gunpoint at the car wash, a Foster City Starbucks and near San Francisco State University. In all, six victims were held up in four separate heists. Alcantar-Ortega was the only one armed with a gun, which he got on the street for $200, prosecutors say.

Their names of the three other suspects were withheld because they are being prosecuted as juveniles. All four are gang members from San Leandro and Hayward, authorities said.

Investigators said they believe the suspects are responsible for several robberies in Alameda County and San Francisco. Authorities also say they suspect other holdup victims have yet to come forward.
