Fatal freeway shooting in Milpitas, one man killed on NB I-680

A day after two people were injured by gunfire in the East Bay, a 30-year-old man was shot and  killed late Monday night on a freeway in Milpitas, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Santa Clara County Coroner identified him as Mathew Rios of Milpitas.

Officers were called after 10 p.m. to northbound Interstate Highway 680 just north of Landess Avenue, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.

There, they found a vehicle in the center media.

Inside was the young man. Paramedics and firefighters tried to save Rios, but he
was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle, Lee said.

All lanes of northbound Highway 680 were closed for about four hours between North Capitol and Landess avenues while officers investigated the killing.

On Sunday, two people were hit by gunfire in the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel. Neither of those two died and a suspect  hasn't been caught in either of the shootings.

At this point, Lee said the shootings don't appear to be related, even though he noted that the violence on the freeways "can be concerning" for drivers.
