Freight train derails near Shell refinery in Martinez
MARTINEZ, Calif. - A freight train carrying liquefied petroleum gas derailed in Martinez early Tuesday causing two tankers to lean off the tracks.
Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Justin E. Jacobs said at around 2:45 a.m., two tank cars derailed in the Shell Oil Yard along the Tracy Subdivision near the Shell refinery. Both cars remained upright, there were no injuries reported and no hazardous material releases, he said.
A spokesperson from Shell told KTVU that the train was leaving the refinery when it went off rails at the track switch.
Jacobs added the cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
