Magnitude 4.9 earthquake shakes coast of Northern California

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake rattled the coast of Northern California September 30, 2023.

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake shook the coast of Northern California Saturday morning.

The USGS posted the quake happened at 10:16 a.m. west of Eureka, with the epicenter located off the coast. 

Residents in Arcata, Eureka, Fortuna and other Humboldt County cities reported feeling the quake. 

The Lost Coast Outpost, a Humboldt County news outlet, reported another quake happened shortly after the first. The second was rated 4.2.
