Mural in Richmond gives nod to jazz culture, agricultural roots
RICHMOND, Calif. - Community members in Richmond gathered over the weekend to paint a mural in honor of Earth Day at the Rancho Market on Market Avenue near 5th Street.
The organizers want the mural to represent North Richmond’s history, including its jazz culture and agricultural roots. They also want to add something colorful to an area with a history of loitering and violence. Richmond has had five homicides in the last few weeks.
“Something like this has a much longer impact for the community,” said community activist and muralist Richard Muro Salazar. “This mural might be here for 10, 20 years and that's a long, lasting impact that we want for Earth Day in North Richmond. We want to make sure our kids and their kids benefit from this.”
