San Francisco celebrates $2.5 billion Salesforce Transit Center

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco celebrated the completion of the Salesforce Transit Center on Friday with a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the $2.5 billion project.

The world-class and tech-savvy transportation hub replaces the Transbay terminal, which was not seismically sound.

The transit center, which stretches four blocks, was built as the major hub for future high-speed trains that will transport tens of thousands of people throughout the city on a daily basis.

State and city leaders including Mayor London Breed came out to cheer the project, which also includes retail shops, artwork, shopping, dining, and a roof top public park.

"This is an incredible project," she said.

The center was designed to ease congestion throughout the city. 

For example there is a bridge that crosses over several streets to provide direct service to people transferring from busses.

It is also designed to withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake.

The Transbay Joint Powers Authority is hosting a block party on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., when the center opens to the public. There will be live music performances, food and drinks, and other activities. People can check out the transit center and public park on the fourth floor.
