It was one year ago that the Valley Fire erupted in Lake County, killing four people.

The fire burned more than 76,000 acres and destroyed 1,200 homes. It was the third most destructive fire in California history.

A year later we're getting a better insight into the frightening moments right after the fire started. 911 calls captured the fear and devastation people felt as it moved closer.

Authorities say that only about 40 percent of the homes that were lost in the fire will be rebuilt.

KTVU's Ken Wayne recently returned to the area.

He says amidst the charred hillsides are signs of renewal. He talked to one man who says he's just now moving back into his home in Middletown.

Some people say the cost of rebuilding, is more than the homes are worth when they're finished. So, for those who didn't have insurance, they can't afford to rebuild.

Some have moved to other parts of Lake County away from the fire zone, and others have decided to leave the county altogether.
