A total of 16 people, including eight children, were displaced Monday morning after a fire tore through an Oakland apartment.

No one was hurt, according to the Oakland Fire Department.

Firefighters said the fire started inside one unit at a three-story complex at1:38 a.m. in the 3000 block of
Fruitvale Avenue.

That unit was damaged by water.

Richelle Scales, one of the people who was evacuated, said she saw the flames "shooting out the window and wood flying" before the fire trucks came rushing down the street to help.

Firefighters are investigating the cause, but hinted that they think it was cooking related.
