16-year-old arrested in Walnut Creek crash that killed teen passenger
WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. - An early morning crash Saturday in Walnut Creek killed a teenage passenger and resulted in the arrest of the 16-year-old driver.
According to the Walnut Creek Police Department, the single-vehicle crash occurred around 2:36 a.m. in the 1600 block of Newell Avenue under the Highway 680 overpass.
Police said five teenagers were riding together when the crash occurred. After the collision, the teenage driver and two passengers fled the scene on foot.
A Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived at the scene and began CPR on the injured teen, who was then transported to John Muir Medical Center, where he died. Authorities have not released the victim's identity but said he was from San Jose.
According to a Bay City News report, the victim was 15 years old and had been riding in the front right passenger seat.
The driver, also from San Jose, was later arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. He was the only person arrested.
