17 cars damaged in Newark Airport garage fire

At least 17 vehicles caught fire on the upper deck of the parking garage at Terminal C at Newark-Liberty International Airport Thursday morning.

Firefighters battled the flames in temperatures that felt well below zero degrees. There were large plumes of smoke billowing over the garage.

Flights were not impacted.

Traffic into the airport was delayed due to the closure of the upper deck. Travelers were advised to use the Air Train to and from Terminal C.

It was not clear what sparked the flames shortly before 7 a.m. It did appear the fire spread from one vehicle to the next. The flames were brought under control by 9:30 a.m.

The Newark fire department was investigating the cause of the blaze.
