Two people were killed after their car went over a cliff near Devil's Slide in San Mateo County on Friday. A man's body has been recovered.

Officials did not have any further identifying information about the man's body, including his race or age. The gender of the second body is uncertain.

A Cal Fire battalion chief said there could be more people in the car that plunged more than 200 feet into the Pacific Ocean, but could not be certain, since the car is upside down and partially submerged.

Crews got the call about the car going over the cliff at around 11:45 a.m. The crash temporarily shut down both directions of Highway 1. The highway has since reopened.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the crash.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

Recovery efforts were called off due to unsafe water conditions due to high tide. In addition, the water's temperature is 55 degrees.

Rescue teams were slammed by waves that started off ankle deep, but became deeper as the tide came in.

Recovery efforts will resume Saturday at 9 a.m.
