SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - The family of a San Jose man critically injured after a hit-and-run last week reached out to KTVU for help. They're asking anyone who witnessed the incident or the driver responsible to please come forward.
26-year-old Eduardo Saucedo is now in critical condition at Regional Medical Center. His family wants to know what happened and for police to find the driver responsible.
"He's 26 years old, but he's like a kid; like a little kid. Cheerful, “says Jesus Hernandez, his stepfather.
Hernandez says he's stunned that his fun-loving son is now lying in a hospital bed, on life support. "It hurts me just to see him lying on the bed."
The young man, who has brought so much laughter to those around him, is now in a condition that brings tears to his loved ones eyes.
Hernandez says his son suffers from severe brain injury and a broken leg.
"I love him. I've raised him since he was 6 1/2 years old. We've been through so many things together as family," says Hernandez.
Last Wednesday, at the busy intersection of Story Road and Via Ferrari around 5 a.m., a driver hit Eduardo as he was riding his bicycle home from work. It was only his third day of his new job at a bakery. The driver left the scene.
"If it was an accident and he didn't know, just come forward and face the consequences," Hernandez says.
Family members say Eduardo is an avid sports fan and loves the Giants. They say the best way to describe him is that he’s respectful of others. Now, they're struggling to come to terms with how this could happen to him.
"We want to see him walk, see him talk and be back to normal, not in a coma on life support," says Candy Bui, Eduardo's cousin.
The family is asking for prayers and they want justice.
"I don't know if he realizes that he's destroyed my family because we're not going to be the same. I'm not going to be the same," says Hernandez.
The family says doctors have given them two options: take Eduardo off life support or move him to a rehab facility. Though doctors have told the family he is not likely to survive his injuries, the family says they refuse to give up hope.
KTVU contacted San Jose Police about surveillance video from a camera at that intersection and if there's a description of the suspect vehicle, but had not heard back as of this writing.
A gofundme has been set up for "Eddie's" recovery costs in ICU.
