South Bay residents concerned for passengers safety on plane diverted to Russia

A San Jose man says he is concerned for the wellbeing of his elderly in-laws after a SFO-bound plane from India was diverted to Russia.

Passengers await a ferry flight after an Air India flight heading for San Francisco International Airport was diverted to Russia on Thursday morning, according to Air India.

The airline said flight AI-183 from Delhi to SF was diverted to Krasnoyarsk International airport (UNKL) in Russia due to a technical issue.

"The aircraft has landed safely and we are working with relevant authorities to ensure guests are taken care of while we decide the next course of action. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew remains top priority," the airline posted to X.

We have reached out to Air India to learn if any of the 243 passengers on board are American citizens, but we have not yet heard back.

SFO bound Air India flight diverts to Russia due to technical issue

There are 243 passengers on board the plane, which Air India says landed safely.

The airline posted responses to people's concerns on social media, saying a third-party support flight was being arranged. A ferry flight was being arranged to pick up passengers at KJA airport to take them to SFO.

A person living in San Jose told us his elderly in-laws were on the diverted flight. He said he was frustrated about the overall communication between the airline and passengers.

"We are just checking on Twitter [X], Ashish Shrivastanva. "We are just trying to see if there's an update. I think they posted an update like six hours ago. Six or eight hours ago, but no update since. Checking online. There is no communication from Air India at all."

Air India said in some of their responses on social media that efforts were being made to operate the ferry flight as soon as possible. They said they would share further updates as soon as they became available.
