Amber Alert canceled: San Jose mother arrested for abducting her children

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - A San Jose mother, who police said kidnapped her two children, has been taken into custody in Colorado. 

CHP issued an Amber Alert after police said 33-year-old Diana Moreira took her children - 1-year-old Alexander Penaloza and 11-year-old Priscilla Penaloza  - during a supervised visit with a social worker.

Police said the children were abducted at Emma Prusch Farm Park at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Moreira was visiting her children. A social worker with Child Protective Services was with them. The social worker took the daughter to the restroom. Police said, Moreira and her son disappeared. The social worker went to find them and then the daughter also went missing. 

“My mom's mad because she will usually tell us and my mom is sad,” said Family Friend Natasha Vasquez. “She hasn't slept all night because she’s been thinking about the kids and where they are at. We’ve been trying to get a hold of her, texting her. She doesn't answer. Nothing.”

Natasha Vasquez’s mother is friends with Moreira. According to them, Moreira, who is originally from Mexico, lost custody of her children a year ago after someone reported the family was living in their car. The children's biological fathers live in Mexico. They said Moreira was unhappy her children were in the foster system.

“She told us. I’m just taking the kids,” said Vasquez. “I just want to have them. I want to see my kids every day. She didn't know what to do. She was stressed.”

Authorities received a tip Monday that the mother and children were in the 16200 block of Mountain Plain Drive in Colorado. 

Moreira was taken into custody without incident and both of the children were safe and unharmed. 

Authorities said Moreira would be booked into jail on an outstanding felony warrant out of San Jose for kidnapping.
