Arrest made in San Francisco's 1st homicide of 2025

Investigators at the scene of San Francisco's first homicide of 2025. 

Police in San Francisco have made an arrest in the first homicide of 2025, officials say. 

On Wednesday, the police said they responded to a Mission District shooting on South Van Ness and 17th Street at around 12:30 a.m., where a gas station is located. 

Officers who arrived at the scene found a man who had been shot multiple times. They, along with paramedics, rendered aid to the victim. Despite those efforts, the man, who has not been identified, was declared dead at the scene. 

Police said officers learned that the suspect fled the scene in an SUV after the shooting happened. 

Homicide detectives and the San Francisco Medical Examiner were at the scene for hours. 

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Jose Rivera Flores was located in his vehicle in the area of Bayshore Boulevard and Geneva Avenue where he was taken into custody without incident, police said. 

The suspect was booked into the San Francisco County Jail for homicide. 

Police did not offer a motive. 

This is considered an open and active investigation.
