SAN FRANCISCO - A 20-something bakery employee at the Safeway Marina in San Francisco went home early on Wednesday morning.
Not because he was in any kind of trouble.
But because he won $1.9 million.
"We were hoping it was going to be one of the employees," said store manager Lea Maxwell. "I literally ran from the meat department, I was screaming unprofessionally. I was so excited for him."
As for the employee? "He was completely in shock," Maxwell said. The employee does not want to be publicly identified and he immediately went home. She said he is avery "hard-working, nice man," and has been employed for two years.
He was a "partial" Mega Millions winner, meaning he won five of the six winning numbers, earning him a cool $1.9 million.
The Mega Millions drawing was Tuesday night. And since no one won, the pot has grown even larger to $868 million. The winning numbers: 3, 45, 49, 61, 69, AND THE Mega Ball IS 9.
Mega Millions is played in 44 states, the Virgin Islands and Washington, D.C.
The odds of winning the jackpot are terrible - one in 302 million. The next drawing is on Friday.
As for the bakery employee? Maxwell said she didn't expect him to return to work. But he is "always welcome," she added.
