A new report says tens of thousands of bridges across the country are defective, and several of the most heavily traveled of the bridges named are in the Bay Area.

The busiest local bridge on the list is the Interstate 680 crossing over Monument Boulevard in Contra Costa County where 235,000 cars cars a day use that stretch of road.

Next is the Interstate 280 overcrossing of Lawrence Expressway in Santa Clara County.

In Solano County, there’s the Interstate 80 bridge over Dan Wilson Creek. And in San Mateo County, it’s the US Highway 101 overpass above Cordilleras Creek. In Alameda County, it's Interstate 580 over San Lorenzo Creek.

The American Road and Transportation Builders Association is a national trade group representing about 9,000 contractors, developers and transportation agencies across the country.

They've been putting out this report for the past five years. It's based on information they collect on highways from state and federal transportation agencies to determine which stretches of highway are in need of repairs.
