Bay Area's first Dunkin' Donuts set to open in spring

One of the world's best known doughnut chains is set to make its premiere in the Bay Area.

The East Coast company, Dunkin’ Donuts, plans to open its first Bay Area restaurant in Walnut Creek on Newell Avenue at a former Taco Bell restaurant.

Construction is set to begin Tuesday and the company tells KTVU Fox 2 that the new 2,200-square-foot location is scheduled to open this spring.

The new site is operated by franchisee Golden Gate Restaurant Group, LLC.

The group, run by former Panera Bread franchise owner Matt Cobo, will reportedly operate 12 new locations in Contra Costa County.

In addition to its famous doughnuts and breakfast sandwiches, Dunkin' Donuts is also popular for its coffee and espresso drinks.

In 2014 the Massachusetts-based company announced plans to open more than 1,000 new restaurants across California.

The chain has more than 11,300 locations worldwide.
