Ronald D. Yandell, 62, is currently serving a life sentence at California State Prison, Sacramento after a 2004 murder conviction.
FOLSOM, Calif. - An inmate at a California state prison is accused of trying to kill two prison guards as he was being escorted back to his cell, prison officials said.
The incident happened last Friday at California State Prison, Sacramento.
Ronald D. Yandell, 62, was being taken back to his cell by two officers after an appointment at the prison's health facility when he allegedly pulled out a makeshift weapon, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
One of the officers deployed their pepper spray three times before Yandell dropped the weapon. He was then restrained and removed from the area, prison officials said.
Yandell was not injured, nor were the officers.
Authorities recovered the makeshift weapon at the scene.
The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office will review the case for possible prosecution.
Yandell, from Contra Costa County, has been serving a life sentence at the Sacramento prison since 2004 after he was convicted of first-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.
