CHP arrests driver in deadly bicyclist hit and run

CHP has made an arrest in a deadly hit and run that killed a bicyclist Tuesday night.

A car hit and killed 42-year-old Christopher Bunag in unincorporated Crockett in Contra Costa County and then fled the scene.

On Wednesday night, CHP received an anonymous phone call that related specific information regarding the suspect driver and the suspect vehicle, which was not a blue pickup truck as initially reported, but a red Mini Cooper.

Officers arrested 28-year-old Kylie Lanae Derkson, a Martinez resident on one felony count of vehicular manslaughter and one felony count of hit and run resulting in death. She is being held at the Martinez detention facility on $100,000 bail.

"It just hurts when people don't stop when things like that happen," said Bunag's neighbor and friend Phil Dumalag. "It's really sad."

Relatives and friends describe Bunag as sweet and loving. He worked for a wine merchant and was an avid cyclist. Bunag was a member of the Hercules Cycling Club, a group of bicyclists that organize group rides and other events to encourage bicycling.

"He's been doing it for years He's done marathons He's done hundred mile rides on a regular basis," his sister Steffi Sabadlab said. "He didn't deserve this he's a wonderful man. Please we just need justice."

CHP officials said Bunag, a Hercules resident, died at the scene after a collision reported at 7:21 p.m. Tuesday just west of The Dead Fish, a popular waterfront restaurant at 20050 San Pablo Ave.

The CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision, was in the area at the time or has any information to provide to call the Contra Costa-area CHP at (925) 646-4980.
