YERBA BUENA ISLAND, Calif. - An incident where a piece of falling concrete fell from a Bay Bridge tunnel may be more widespread than originally thought.
According to Caltrans, rain, leaks and corrosion caused the concrete to fall in the eastbound tunnel of the Bay Bridge on Yerba Buena Island.
There are concerns it could it happen again.
According to a report by the San Francisco Chronicle, there are 12 spots where concrete could potentially fall.
The report says this was discovered after doing follow up tests from an incident back on January 30th where a woman was driving in the eastbound tunnel and an approximately two foot piece of concrete fell.
It caused about $3,000 worth of damage to the passenger side of the car.
But the Chronicle says the problem may lie in possible leaks in more than 200 drain openings.
The water is apparently seeping through on the upper deck and may have affected the steel rebar on the lower deck, and that may have pushed the piece of concrete onto the road.
At this point, Caltrans tells the Chronicle that it plans on bringing in specialized X-ray equipment to find any significant cracks.
They also say there is no immediate danger to commuters.
It's unclear when this may get fixed.
