Concert curfew remains in place for Levi's Stadium

The 10 p.m. curfew at Levi's Stadium will remain in place for now. Santa Clara City Council decided at Tuesday's heated meeting. The debate over extending the city's curfew for weeknight concerts at Levi's Stadium comes after singer Ed Sheeran canceled his concert. The 49ers said it's because of the music ban. The 49ers are concerned more acts will follow and it will set a bad precedent.

Coldplay is expected to play at Levi's Stadium next Wednesday night. The vice mayor wants to temporarily lift that 10 p.m. curfew but faces opposition.

Inside Santa Clara City Hall, representatives from the 49ers were at odds with Santa Clara leaders over the city's 10 p.m. concert curfew. The feud reignited this week after Grammy winning artist Ed Sheeran canceled plans for next year's event at Levi's Stadium.

"We are disappointed because we are in the business to entertain people and have people come to this great venue and this is perfect example of when things come up with politics," said 49ers Vice President of Stadium Operations Jim Mercurio.

The 49ers say the city will lose $800,000 in revenue to its general fund. As a compromise, the team wants the city to consider allowing up to four weeknight concerts a year to run one hour later. Vice Mayor Dominic Caserta agreed saying acts will go elsewhere if the curfew sticks.

"I think this is a bad public policy," said Caserta. "I think this is political theater."

Coldplay is scheduled to perform at Levi's Stadium next Wednesday night. Last month, the 49ers requested a curfew extension. City leaders voted it down.

Both U2 and Beyonce broke the weeknight curfew before. Council Member Kathy Watanabe doesn't understand why artists can't schedule concerts on a weekend if they want to perform past 10 p.m. or start an hour earlier. She wants to protect stadium neighbors.

"This is where they live," said Watanabe. "They were here first. We are here to protect our community and that's the bottom line."

The 49ers said artists want to start later for theatrical purposes. Levi's Stadium is the only stadium in the state that has a 10 p.m. curfew Sunday through Thursday. Some residents had signs that said follow the law and they want to keep it that way.

"People have work the next day," said Hosam Haggag of Santa Clara. "People have kids who are going to school the next day. It's really important we stick to the law, that we follow the law."

Coldplay is expected to go past curfew. If they do, the band will have to pay a $750. As for Ed Sheeran, the vice mayor said, the singer may be in talks to perform at AT&T Park which has an 11 p.m. curfew.
