CUPERTINO, Calif. (KTVU) - The city of Cupertino has taken a step forward toward converting an old shopping mall into a mixed use housing and retail center, along with parks and play areas.
The city has notified the developer, Sand Hill Property that the Vallco Town Center Project qualifies for a streamlined review process under the state's new development law.
The city says it will make a final determination on the project in September.
The Vallco Town Center project would include more than 2,400 units of housing. Half of those would be affordable.
There's also 400,000 square feet of shopping and nearly 2-million square feet of office space at the mall on North Wolfe Road.
Critics say the project would greatly increase congestion in Cupertino.
