Police look for suspect in deadly stabbing near Embarcadero BART station
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco police are searching for the suspect who fatally stabbed a man in the Financial District early this morning, near the Embarcadero BART station.
Police responded to Market and Main streets at about 5:50 a.m., following reports of a man bleeding in the street.
A nearby business captured the moment the victim stumbled into the street and collapsed.
A witness spotted that man lying in the road before officers arrived.
"It was dark, there was a young guy, a male, sprawled on the ground, face down," said Jim Fotenos.
San Francisco police and firefighters administered first aid to the victim, but it was too late.
"Despite the life-saving efforts of first responders the victim succumbed to the injuries at the scene," said Paulina Henderson from the San Francisco Police Department.
Investigators are not yet releasing the name of the victim.
KTVU spoke with a person who said it appeared that the victim may have been the aggressor and started the fight.
"We believe this is not a random incident based off of information investigators have gathered so far," said Officer Henderson. "We are still searching for the suspect, and we don't believe there is any danger to the public at this time."
Witnesses said the attacker made his way into the Embarcadero Station.
"Based off the information that we were given, we believe the suspect may possibly have fled through BART," said Henderson. "But we can't confirm if the suspect possibly got on a train."
Investigators are reviewing video of the stabbing and asking for anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
