SAN JOSE (KTVU) -- Police were searching for clues Tuesday after a double shooting that left one man dead and another one critically injured.
Police were called shortly after 2 p.m. to South 11th and East San Antonio streets near San Jose State University after receiving reports of gunfire, authorities said. When the officers arrived they found two men who each had a gunshot wound.
Police said the victims were found inside a grey minivan and the vehicle had several bullet holes. Police said the shooting happened as the vehicle was traveling down the street.
Police spent most of Tuesday night searching the van, which was surrounded by evidence markers. San Jose State Student Tim Pearson lives in a fraternity house near the campus and heard the gunfire.
"It was pretty rapid," said Pearson. "It was hard for us to tell. It was definitely close enough for us to realize the immediate danger we were in."
"The vehicle was hit with several rounds on it," said police Lt. Ed Pedriera. "There were some casings in the area. There are a lot of moving parts to the investigation."
One of the victims died at the hospital while the other one was listed in critical condition. Police said it was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting. The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
"It's kind of a weird time to be happening," said Neighbor Michael Burden. "Usually it's on a frat row so it's pretty safe with just college kids walking by."
"You expect these things to happen like on the east side or deeper downtown," said Neighbor Daniel Fonseca. "This is definitely a nice area."
Police said the person who opened fire fled from the scene in an unidentified vehicle. A description of the suspect or vehicle was not immediately released.
The slaying marks the 24th homicide so far this year in San Jose and occurred less than 24 hours after another murder when a man was found shot to death in a car on the city's north side Monday night. Police said it was too early to say if the killings were related.
The shooting comes less than 24 hours after another man was found shot to death in a car off Berryessa and Lundy Avenue in San Jose.
Police haven't made any arrests in Monday's homicide and said it's too early to tell if the two cases are linked. So far, this year the City of San Jose has seen 24 homicides. Last year, at this time, it was 10 homicides.
"It's very sad," said resident Susan Seim. "It's disconcerting. It's everywhere. It's not just downtown. It's everywhere."
Police are now hoping surveillance video from surrounding businesses and the fraternity and sorority houses will provide clues to the gunman in this latest case.
"Most of the stuff that happens here is harmless," said Tim Pearson of San Jose State. "We've never dealt with anything to this degree like a shooting. That's what kind of threw us off. We didn't expect a shooting to be so close to our house."
San Jose State University sent an alert to students describing the suspect as a Latino man, 20 to 30 years old possibly also driving in a van.
Anyone with information about the Tuesday shooting was asked to call the police Homicide Unit at 408-277-5283.
