A fire and riot broke out Thursday at a prison in northern Mexico.

Local journalists reported that some 50 people have died so far.

Rescue workers could be seen bringing injured inmates from the Topo Chico prison in Monterrey. Some of the prisoners suffered burns.

The number of dead was unclear. Officials of the Nuevo Leon state government refused to comment on the situation, but said officials would discussion the situation at a later time.

Pictures and videos from local television stations showed that the fire was continuing to rage out of control.

A group of people, with loved ones being held at the prison, gathered at the gate of the facility Thursday morning.

Some shook and kicked the prison gates, demanding to enter.

Witnesses said the fire broke out at around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday PST.
