Driver dies after crashing into Caltrans truck at construction site: CHP

A man is dead after crashing into a Caltrans truck Saturday morning in Redwood City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 1:45 a.m. CHP officers received a report about a crash on US-101 northbound, south of Whipple Avenue, about a crash that occurred on a portion of the freeway that was closed for construction work.

Officials said they learned a Subaru Crosstrek was driving northbound in the center lane when suddenly the driver turned to the left onto the closed portion of the roadway and crashed into a Ram construction truck.

The closed portion of the roadway was "clearly marked" with orange traffic cones. Multiple construction vehicles with their emergency lights activated were also present, the CHP said.

The Subaru crashed into a Caltrans truck that had an illuminated arrow board that was directing traffic to the right.

Emergency responders said the driver had fatal injuries from the crash and died at the scene. The Ram driver had only minor injuries.

Officials are still investigating the crash and why the driver suddenly changed course.

KTVU reached out to Caltrans for comment but has yet to hear back.
