Driver, passenger killed after crashing into tree, house in Fremont
FREMONT, Calif. - The driver of a BMW sedan crashed into a tree in a Fremont neighborhood, which then hit a house, causing "catastrophic" damage, firefighters said.
The driver and passenger were both killed, firefighters said.
The Alameda County Coroner identified one of the people in the car as Amit Singh, 33, of Fremont.
KTVU was unable to immediately reach his family or learn whether he was the driver or the passenger.
The crash occurred on Castro Lane at Mission Boulevard about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to Sgt. Kim Macdonald.
The damage was extensive; the car was totaled after it split in two, and it took out part of the garage door and siding.
The car was loaded onto two different tow trucks early Thursday morning.
Crews spent much of the day repairing damage from what neighbors called a horrifying car crash.
Police said they made contact with people inside the house, and no one was hurt.
KTVU also spoke to the homeowners - a husband and wife – who did not want to speak publicly.
A next door neighbor who did not want to be identified said police told her the driver was likely driving well above the speed limit.
"My kids walk to school, so I do see cars speeding all the time where the middle school is," she said. "It's super concerning to me, because they speed. All the neighborhood kids walk to school."
"This is sad to hear about the loss of life right outside my front door," said the neighbor. Other neighbors said two men were traveling in a BMW in speeds exceeding 100 miles an hour.
Mahesh Venkad said he heard a very loud noise. "We thought it was dumpster or metal scraping or someone picking up garbage. But hen we saw it was a huge crash. Horrendous."
Neighbors say speeding in the Mission Hills section of the city is a recurring problem and that if this collision happened a little earlier in the evening, more lives could have been lost.
Fremont police declined an on-camera interview, but said this marked the 14th fatal accident in the city this year.
Police have not released any more details.
