OAKLAND, Calif. (BCN) - A tire repair shop in East Oakland that twice burned overnight was left uninhabitable and will need to be demolished, a fire battalion chief said Monday.
Investigators are still working to determine whether the first fire reported at 2:15 a.m. and a second larger fire reported at about 6 a.m. are connected, Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Erik Logan said.
Little was left of the shop and its upstairs offices after the second fire at 10453 San Leandro St. near 105th Avenue. The two-alarm blaze took about two hours to control and the roof collapsed as it burned, Logan said.
All that remains of the building is charred concrete walls and rubble that will need to be torn down, Logan said.
The first fire Monday morning was reported at 2:14 a.m. Arriving firefighters found smoke rising from the vents of the building, Battalion Chief Emon Usher said.
The fire was contained to the office areas on the first and second floor and only a small part of the concrete walls were damaged. The fire was under control within about 30 minutes.
But when the building again caught fire about three hours later, it was much more difficult to control and finished the building's destruction.
Investigators have not determined the cause of either blaze and are looking into what connection, if any, there is between the two fires, Logan said.
No one was in the shop when the fires broke out. No firefighters or civilians were injured, Logan said.
