Firefighters continue to battle flames at San Jose storage facility

KTVU's Bailey O'Carroll shares an update on the 3-alarm fire that broke out Wednesday evening at a Public Storage facility in San Jose.

A fire that broke out Wednesday in a San Jose storage facility continued to pose problems for firefighters who expected to be at the burnt site for much of Thursday.

There were still flames at a Public Storage facility in San Jose on Thursday.

Witnesses described hearing loud pops and seeing colorful explosions, suggesting that fireworks were detonating during the blaze on Wednesday evening.

"We heard this big, huge bang, like…a big rig was coming into our house," said Angela Viveros, who lives across the street from the storage facility.

Fire department officials have not commented on what caused the fire, but said there was debris from fireworks in the street.

"Whether or not that was what started it or whether that just happened to be part of the items that burned in the storage unit, we're not sure at this point," said Fire Department Capt. Brad Cloutier.

The San Jose Fire Department reported that at 6:38 p.m. crews were at the scene of a fire at a commercial building at Blossom Hill and Cottle roads.

There were 70 firefighters trying to contain the fire from outside the building. People who live nearby told us they were concerned about the fire spreading.

"We have a lot of like dry shrubs, plants and buildings. It's a lot of people. A lot of concentration," said Kye Hasse, from San Jose.

"We just moved. So we had our stuff in this storage. I would be so upset if everything that we had had gotten burned because somebody putting fireworks in the storage," said Lupe, who did not provide her last name, but said her apartment complex is nearby.
