OAKLAND, Calif. - Firefighters across the East Bay were busy the morning after the Fourth of July stamping out fires -- at least one of them was sparked by fireworks.
A small fire at Phat Boyz Car Stereo in Oakland at 44th Avenue and International Boulevard was started about 5 a.m. on Thursday after fireworks landed on the roof, a firefighter told KTVU. The building was unoccupied so there were no injuries.
About half an hour earlier, Oakland Fire Battalion Chief James Bowron said crews put out a two-alarm fire at a home in the 5900 block of Hayes Street near Seminary Avenue where six people were inside. All escaped to safety though a 21-year-old woman suffered some smoke inhalation. A dog and a cat apparently died in the fire.
There was no immediate word on how this fire started. Neighbor Louie Calderon told KTVU he saw as the home's porch just "blew up" behind him in a scene straight from a movie. He also saw a "cat on fire" run out of the house.
Oakland police said they made 56-fireworks related citations on July 4 and five arrests.
And in Walnut Creek, a fire of "suspicious origin" was reported about 1 a.m. at an old, abandoned home on First Avenue in Walnut Creek.
