It sounds like a gadget straight out of a futuristic sci-fi film-- a phone with holographic video projection capabilities. But it appears the future is now with the first ever holographic smart phone set to be released as soon as this summer.

The Southern California-based company RED, which makes high-end video cameras for filmmakers,  unveiled its new Hydrogen ONE smartphone at an event in Hollywood over the weekend.

The company says it's time to stop seeing the world in 2D capability with today's smartphones and instead experience it through holographic images with a device that promises to "shatter the mold of conventional thinking."

Hydrogen ONE's imaging will allow you to look around, below and even into the screen's image, without the need of special glasses.

The phone features a 5.7 inch screen capable of viewing holographic images, stereo 3D, virtual reality, and augmented reality. It will also offer regular 2D images as well, according to RED.

It's not clear yet what movies, games, shopping and other applications will be able to accommodate the new technology.

The company says Hydrogen ONE will be an Android platform. Last week AT&T announced that it will sell the device come summer. Verizon has said it plans to offer the product "later this year."

Getting your hands on this first of its kind smartphone will cost you a pretty penny. Pre-order prices for a titanium made Hydrogen ONE phone was set at $1,595. The price-tag for one made of aluminum alloy was $1,195.

At last check Monday morning the company was no longer taking pre-orders and said that the current pricing was available for a limited time only.
