Fishermen help Antioch police take armed suspect into custody after wild pursuit
ANTIOCH, Calif. (KTVU) - An armed pursuit suspect was taken into Antioch police custody Monday before being taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained when he fell from the Antioch Bridge.
Police were dispatched at 12:23 p.m. for a call on a felony assault from the previous night. The suspect was identified as Sunny Pal, 29, of Pittsburg. Dispatch was told Pal was suicidal and armed with a knife.
When police spotted Pal at Peppertree Way, the suspect fled in his vehicle, which began a four-mile chase.
The chase ended at Wilbur Ave. and Highway 160 when Pal entered the highway going in the wrong direction. The suspect turned around and drove onto the Antioch Bridge in the right direction, but officers closed in on him, causing him to turn around in his car once more.
He then drove back up to the peak of the bridge, where he abandoned his car and jumped into the river below.
Pal survived the fall, was picked up by some nearby fisherman, who then took him to the police who were waiting nearby at the Antioch Pier.
