In honor of Mike Mibach's 40th birthday we are taking a look back at the big stories from the year Mike started at KTVU - 2005.

We dug into our archives to find Mike's first appearance on KTVU when he covered a homicide in San Francisco.

Scott Peterson in court

In our KTVU archived footage from 2005, Scott Peterson was sentenced to death by lethal injection in the murder of his wife Laci Peterson and their unborn son.

The murder occurred in 2002. Laci Peterson, who was 8 months pregnant at the time, was reported missing from their Modesto home. Peterson reported that his wife was missing on Christmas Eve. During the investigation police learned Peterson had multiple affairs during his marriage to Laci. Remains of Laci and the couple's unborn child were found on April 13, 2003 along Richmond's Point Isabel Regional Shoreline. It was the same area where Peterson had been reportedly boating the day Laci disappeared.

In our archived footage the judge fully supported the jury's death penalty verdict. Laci's mother called her former son-in-law a heartless baby killer with no soul. She said, "I hope you burn in hell for all eternity." Peterson is currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison.

Legalizing Gay Marriage

In our archived footage, the Superior Court judge in San Francisco ruled the state law limiting marriage to a man and a woman is unconstitutional. While many celebrated the ruling, opponents vowed to appeal it to the State Supreme Court and US Supreme Court if necessary. Same sex marriage became legal in California in 2013.

On June 26 of 2015 the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage across the United States.
