BAY POINT, Calif. - At least four people were in police custody Monday after a dispute between the occupants of two cars erupted into gunfire that may have occurred as the vehicles were traveling on state Highway 4 near Antioch.
Police said two occupants in a black Jaguar were arrested along with two suspects from another unidentified car. The suspects' identities were not immediately available.
Police said the incident began shortly before 3 p.m. when officers were called to the parking lot of a Quikstop, located in the 1100 block of Sycamore Drive. Investigators said a rifle was used to fire several bullets, which struck unoccupied vehicles in the parking lot. No injuries have been reported from the incident, police said.
The Jaguar and another vehicle fled from the scene onto the westbound lanes of Highway 4. Police have not yet confirmed reports that the occupants inside the vehicles were shooting at each other while the cars were traveling on the freeway.
Antioch police stopped the Jaguar at a Shell gas station on Bailey Road in Bay Point, where the two occupants were taken into custody and a weapon seized. The California Highway Patrol stopped the other vehicle on Highway 4 and the other suspects were detained along with a gun.
It was not immediately clear if the incident was related to a string of other shootings that have occurred recently on Highway 4.
Contra Costa County sheriff's officials initially said there was a shooting incident reported on Highway 4 near Bailey Road in the Pittsburg area sometime before 3 p.m. today.
The Antioch Police Department is the agency leading the investigation into the shooting. Police asked anyone with information to call 925-778-2441.
