SAN LEANDRO, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol confirmed one person was hurt in a freeway shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon in San Leandro.
California Highway Patrol says a shooting was reported around 2:15 p.m. A passenger in a vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 580 near Grand Avenue was shot by someone in another car. No suspect was named.
"It’s definitely a big fear when you’re driving because people get very angry for no reason when they’re driving," said Kai, who's from Fremont.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and their current condition is unknown. CHP has not confirmed a motive for the shooting.
After the shooting, the victim was driven to the San Leandro Police Department parking lot.
Drivers who spoke with KTVU say they're more concerned now for their safety on the road.
"I don’t want to get out of my car and fight someone. They pull out a gun on me or something, so it’s definitely a fear. You never know. Even when we’re driving around, it’s late. People could be on drugs or whatever," Kai said.
This latest shooting is happening just a few weeks after an 8-year-old was paralyzed by a stray bullet on I-580 in Oakland.
In the last two years, at least seven children have been shot on Bay Area freeways and last year there were 154 freeway shootings in the Bay Area.
A driver from Concord says people need to keep a cool head when driving and be aware of their surroundings.
"Don’t have road rage. Right now, it’s kind of dangerous. You can literally lose your life just because someone cuts you on the freeway," said Sepi, from Concord.
The shooting is still being investigated and if anyone potential witnesses or those with any information are asked to contact California Highway Patrol.
