HYATTSVILLE, Md. - A crying baby with a dirty diaper is always a stressful situation for a parent, especially if they are not close to home.
One Maryland father shopping at Macy's store in Prince George’s County was even more stressed out because he couldn't change his son's diaper. But what that father did next might have dads cheering across the country.
Anthony Dew and his 4-month-old son, Jeremiah, set out in early December to get some Christmas shopping done.
“Every father knows you've got to change the diaper before you get started,” said Dew.
As they walked into the Macy's store at The Mall of Prince Georges, little Jeremiah was fussy and he needed a new diaper.
“I couldn’t find a changing table,” Dew told us. “At that point, I was stuck because unless the baby is content, you’ve got to have a dry diaper.”
They searched every floor and alerted management. Dew got frustrated and decided to leave Macy's without spending a dime.
He went home and wrote to Macy's chairman and CEO Terry Lundgren on behalf of all fathers who just need access to changing stations.
“I wrote the letter to the chairman,” he said. “I like to take it to the top.”
And the letter did the trick. The manager of the store Dew visited was away on a work trip when his bosses contacted him.
“I immediately got out of the event and made a couple of phone calls,” said store manager Ufuoma Onosakponome. “We put a team together and started work almost immediately.”
Not only was there a new changing station, but there was also a renovated men's room – a pleasant place for dads to change kids.
Jeremiah’s mother is proud of her husband and amazed how quickly Macy’s took action.
“I was quite surprised, actually, that it was within the same week,” said Tameka Dew. “I am very surprised.”
And on behalf of all fathers, Dew said all businesses should keep in mind that “babies matter and changing stations too.”
Dew wrote us here at FOX 5 because he wanted to give Macy's the praise it deserved. He said they also gave them a gift card to apologize for the inconvenience.
