Giraffe gives birth at Safari West

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KTVU) - Safari West in Santa Rosa is welcoming a new baby giraffe.

Their giraffe Malaika gave birth to Tara on Wednesday. Safari West says Tara is petite. She is 5 foot 10 inches and weighs 145 pounds. 

Safari West says the baby is thriving and spending a lot of her time playing, sleeping, and eating. 

During the birthing process, the other giraffes were let into another enclosure since giraffes usually go off on their own to give birth in the wild. 

Tara is the second animal born at Safari West this year. 

Founder of Safari West, Peter Lang says, "We are really pleased with the new arrival. Birth is always a true to life miracle".

Both of Tara's parents were born at Safari West.
