OAKLAND, Calif. - It's that time of year again when the smell of Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties are in the air.
Online cookie sales
How to buy:
Girl Scout cookie season kicked off formally on Monday, but here are some important things to know:
For now, cookies are only being sold online at ilovecookies.org, but not all troops in Northern California from Gilroy to Oregon border are set up to sell the cookies this way. Cookies will be delivered on Jan. 29.
In-person cookie sales
The cookies will be sold in person starting on Feb. 6 through March 16.
Cookies will be more expensive
Cookies are more expensive this year. Each flavor is $1 more, costing $7 a box. Shipping is extra.
Interim CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern California Mary-Jane Strom said in a statement that the pricier cookies are a "necessary adjustment" to address rising costs.
How much each troop earns
Dig deeper:
One East Bay troop leader told KTVU that last year, the local troops only made 80 cents on every box of cookies sold. This year, each troop gets between $1 to $1.25 per $7 box sold, according to Girl Scout documents.
According to the Girl Scouts, the cookie program accounts for more than 60% of council operating revenues, and the net revenues are shared with troops in the form of proceeds and bonus amounts.
The council also uses funds to support financial assistance, volunteer training, membership support, camps, office and program facilities and outdoor experiences, the Girl Scouts said.

One cookie being retired
And finally, this is the end of the run for Toast-yay. The Girl Scouts of Northern California said in a news release that the flavor "will be retired to make way for future innovations."
Other cookies being sold this season include the iconic Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties, as well as the Adventurefuls, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Lemonades and Trefoils.
Gluten free option
There is also a new cookie this year, which is also gluten-free: The caramel chocolate chip.
This year, over 16,000 Girl Scouts in Northern California will participate in the cookie entrepreneurship program with the goal of selling 4.3 million packages of cookies, the organization said.
