Hayward police investigating officer-involved shooting
Hayward Police Department is investigating a Wednesday afternoon police shooting, Alameda County Sheriff's Department confirms.
Hayward, Calif. - Hayward police shot and killed a man in his 20s who they said was a person of interest in a homicide case. The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday in a neighborhood near the intersection of Wildwood and Kelly Streets. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the man was sought in the death of a homeless man. They attempted to stop him and it ultimately ended with the use of deadly force when the traffic stop turned fatal.
“I was in the front of my house when all of a sudden I heard over 10 shots being fired,” said Neighbor Jose Camacho. “They just started shooting. It was quite a few officers out there.”
Police did not say how many officers were involved in this incident, only that they, "discharged their service weapons."
It is not clear what the circumstances leading up to the shooting were exactly.
“The subject of the stop was a man being sought in the shooting death of a homeless man on May 1 of this year,” said Hayward Police Chief Toney Chaplain.
Police said, that homeless man was shot and killed at an encampment on Industrial Parkway. The investigation led them to Wednesday’s encounter.
“During contact, officers discharged their service weapons and at this point we are determining what led to that outcome,” said Chief Chaplain.
Hayward Police confirm more than one officer discharged their firearms. Police would not say what led them to the Wildwood location. Neighbors said the suspect has ties to a home there.
Skyfox flew above the scene and showed police cars surrounding a white sedan. A bright yellow tarp was also seen covering a body on the ground next to a police car. A BearCat unit accompanied the heavy police presence.
One man, who did not want to go on camera, also heard the gunfire. While it hasn't been confirmed, he believes the suspect may have fired a weapon first.
As police processed the scene, loved ones of the suspect were at the scene seen consoling one another.
Police did not reveal the identity of the officers who fired their guns nor the suspect killed. The officers are on routine paid administrative leave. In addition to an internal investigation, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is conducting their own investigation.

This is the eighth deadly officer-involved shooting in the Bay Area since Easter.
