Two people were rescued after a portion of the Santa Cruz Pier collapsed and was seen floating away Monday.

Neither officials nor the resort have provided information about how the incident happened.

"The safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident," the resort said.

Heidi Schmitt said she was on the chairlift 10 minutes before the accident.

"As we were getting up in the air, we could see about 15, quite a few EMTs, or the red medics surrounding someone, and my husband did notice the backpack still hanging from the chairlift," she said. "Thankfully that wasn't us."

The exact cause of the accident has not been revealed.
