SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Several people were hospitalized after a chairlift accident at Heavenly Mountain Resort in Lake Tahoe on Monday.
A spokesperson for the resort confirmed that an incident occurred at the Comet Express chairlift but did not provide further details.
Witnesses reported seeing two four-person chairlifts collide before several people fell to the ground.
The Tahoe Douglas Fire Department said five people were transported to Renown Hospital in Reno just after 10 a.m. Their conditions are not yet known.
Neither officials nor the resort have provided information about how the incident happened.
"The safety of our guests is our top priority and the resort is investigating the incident," the resort said.
Heidi Schmitt said she was on the chairlift 10 minutes before the accident.
"As we were getting up in the air, we could see about 15, quite a few EMTs, or the red medics surrounding someone, and my husband did notice the backpack still hanging from the chairlift," she said. "Thankfully that wasn't us."
The exact cause of the accident has not been revealed.
