High speed police chase in LA area ends in arrest

LOS ANGELES (KTVU) -- A high speed police chase that began in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County and stretched down the 405 into Orange County ended Monday when the driver pulled over and surrendered.

No injuries were reported during the chase, which lasted almost two hours before the driver of the black Lincoln Navigator was taken into custody.

According to authorities, the chase began around noon in the Calabasas area of the San Fernando Valley in the westbound lanes of the 101 or the Ventura Freeway when the driver was said to be driving recklessly. The male driver refused to stop and police and state patrol officers began pursuing the vehicle.

The SUV entered the westbound Ventura (101) Freeway about 12:30 p.m., and the sheriff's department asked for assistance from the CHP, which took over the pursuit, said CHP Officer Monica Posada.

The suspect reversed course and drove east on the 101 Freeway, then north on the San Diego (405) Freeway to Sylmar, where he transitioned to two other freeways in a circular pattern and wound up driving south on the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass and into Orange County.

About 2:30 p.m., the driver eventually slowed down and pulled over before emerging from the vehicle with his hands behind his head.

The suspect's identity and a list of charges was pending. It was not clear if the suspect voluntarily stopped or if the vehicle ran out of fuel.
