Hit-and-run in Antioch leaves 2 brothers dead

An overnight crash in Antioch has left two children dead and the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene, police said.

An overnight crash in Antioch has left two children dead and the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene, police said.

The deadly incident happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of West G and Sixth Streets in Antioch.

The two boys, ages 12 and 13, were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

A four-door blue sedan, which was carrying the children, is believed to have run a stop sign, which led to the accident, a lieutenant told KTVU at the scene.

A black Cadillac SUV did not have a stop sign and T-boned the blue sedan, police said, adding that the driver of the Cadillac fled the scene on foot.

"It appears speed and reckless driving were factors in this incident," police said in a press release.

Police have yet to determine if the kids in the blue sedan were driving themselves or if the driver of that vehicle also fled.

The crash snapped off a fire hydrant at the intersection, which caused water to gush into the street. On Saturday morning, the fire hydrant was still dripping water into the gutter, even though it had been repaired.

A neighbor who didn't want to share his name told KTVU he heard the loud crash and ran outside.

He said, "Me and my brother, we both heard it at about midnight. We jumped over the rail. Myself and other people from the neighborhood were breaking the car doors open, trying to get the young man out."

He saw two people run off as he and others pulled the boys from the damaged car.

"I just saw people running. Nobody cares who running, we are just trying to save people’s lives," the neighbor said.

Neighbors joined to help rescue the boy in the passenger seat. It was an upsetting scene for the witness who tried to help.

"There was blood all over his face. He was knocked out. I don’t know if it was his brother or cousin or whoever, it was two young men. And we just pulled him out and started praying over him," said the witness. "And they were young. All you could see was they were youth in their faces."

The names of the children have yet to be released. Antioch police reported they are in contact with the parents of the young victims.
