Hot days ahead prompt Spare the Air alert
BAY AREA (KTVU) - Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to bring the heat with temperatures moving above the century mark inland.
The hot weather has prompted the first spare the air day of the summer.
Officials with the Air Quality District say high temperatures and light winds combine to trap exhaust and create unhealthy air.
They’re asking people to ditch their cars if possible, walk, carpool or take public transportation.
And with the triple digit heat the next couple days, people will be looking for ways to stay cool.
The heat also has firefighters across the Bay Area on alert. On Monday strong winds pushed a brush fire across hillsides near Bay Point.
Contra Costa County firefighters were able to contain the fire to 37 acres before it could do any damage to homes.
Another fire in Santa Rosa did much more damage, after breaking out in a lot full of dry brush. One neighboring home caught fire and was gutted by the flames. That fire started when winds blew two power lines together, sending sparks down onto the dry grass.
