SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - San Jose police released more details about the police shooting of an armed, suicidal man Monday night in East San Jose. Chief Eddie Garcia says relatives of 18-year-old Anthony Nunez called police to say he was suicidal with a gun.
At a Tuesday news conference Garcia said when officers arrived on Feller Avenue, they learned Nunez had shot himself in the head, but was still alert, walking in and out of the home and was carrying a gun. According to police, they tried to get him to drop his weapon for 14 minutes.
Nunez then pointed his weapon at officers, according to police. That's when two officers fired at least one round each.
"The officers did not want to force a confrontation, which is why they tactically retreated. and why in these instances quite frankly, time is on our side. and they wanted to slow it down. they did a good job of slowing it down. unfortunately it wasn't the result we all wanted," said Chief Garcia.
The young man died a short time later. Distraught family members gathered at the home.
The shooting occurred on the 900 block of Feller Avenue in the east San Jose foothills on Monday just before 5 p.m.
This was the fourth officer-involved shooting in San Jose this year and the second fatal incident. The victim's family told KTVU that he worked at a nearby grocery store and may have been suffering from depression.
Police have not identified the officers involved. Chief Garcia said both officers are veterans and are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved-shooting.
