Man on Benicia Bridge taken into custody, lanes remain closed while device investigated
BENICIA, Calif. (KTVU) - A man who shutdown the southbound lanes of I-680 of the Benicia Bridge for nearly two hours was detained Friday night California Highway Patrol officials said.
The male subject was initially thought to be a jumper, according to CHP Contra Costa before it became clear he claimed to have a suspicious package. A sig-alert on the incident was issued at 7:35 p.m.
At 8:27 p.m., CHP officers were not able to get close to him for cautionary reasons, CHP Officer Erica Tatum said. %INLINE%
While the man is in custody there is still no estimated time to reopen the roadway as CHP awaits an explosive ordinance device team to inspect whether or not a bomb exists.
Tatum said negotiators were brought to the scene.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes and to avoid the area.
