Man remains in critical condition after shooting himself at West Oakland BART station

WEST OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) -- A man remains in critical condition after apparently shooting himself during a confrontation at the West Oakland BART station.

The station was closed Tuesday night after the shooting, according to a BART spokesperson.

BART officials first announced that the West Oakland station had been temporarily closed due to police activity at 8:10 p.m.

BART later released a statement regarding the incident on the BART website. At approximately 8 p.m., BART officers approached a man smoking on the West Oakland platform and asked him to extinguish his cigarette. 

Upon further questioning, the man provided officers with false names, and then threatened to jump in front of an oncoming train.

Officers then made contact with the man, who resisted violently and reached for his waist.  Officers tased the suspect, who then shot himself in the abdomen as he attempted to retrieve his weapon. 

The suspect was then transported to Highland hospital in critical condition, and West Oakland station was closed for a full investigation of events.  Police recovered the suspect's weapon and bullet casing from the scene.

The BART station later reopened just before 12 a.m. 

The District Attorney's Office will be involved in the investigation along with BART's independent police auditor.
