The recent shooting of 49er Ricky Pearsall has put safety in San Francisco back in the spotlight. While in the immediate aftermath of that high-profile shooting, there has been an increased police presence in Union Square. Some have said with so many officers focused in the shopping district, that neighborhood safety is being neglected.

"We provide service to the entire city," SFPD Chief William Scott said at Wednesday's 10th annual Chinatown Night Out held in Portsmouth Square. Scott acknowledged the robust police presence in Union Square and said, "we move officers around."

At the same Chinatown event, Mayor London Breed responded to criticism that the city's response to the Pearsall shooting was due to his celebrity status.

"We have one of the lowest crime rates, one of the lowest violent crime rates we've had," Breed said about San Francisco. "Our investigators…they do the work, they make the arrests and then our D.A. prosecutes. I don't think it's fair to say. It's just that those crimes don't get attention from the media in the same way."

No further information about the Mission shooting was immediately available. No arrests have been made.

We will update this story with the latest information as we learn more.
