Martinez police sergeant to be honored in annual blood drive

He's being remembered as a warrior, a loving husband, father, son and friend. Sgt. Brian Carter will be honored in an annual blood drive in Martinez on Wednesday, five years after he died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Carter was a Bay Area native with the Martinez police force when he passed away at the age of 37, leaving behind his wife Tiana, and two young sons Peyton and Preston.

His family says that during his battle with cancer, Carter received numerous blood and platelet transfusions to help with a stem cell transplant which later helped prolong his life.

Family members say his biggest joys were his two boys, and he gave his sons all that he had even when he was at his weakest.

They say he was given extra time to be with his family, thanks to the generous donations of others, who gave blood.

So shortly after his death in 2011, to honor Carter, his family and friends launched an annual memorial blood drive.

Organizers say their hope is to offer the gift of life to others, so others may benefit as Carter did.

Carter was a respected SWAT team leader with the Martinez Police Department and family members say he lived by the motto, "Be not afraid."

This year's Sgt. Brian Carter Memorial Blood Drive is scheduled for Wednesday, June 29, 2016 from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM.

It will take place at Martinez City Hall in the City Council chambers at 525 Henrietta Street.

Organizers are reminding donors to bring a photo ID and remember to eat and drink before donating.
