2 killed, 12 hurt during violent Fourth of July in Hayward

HAYWARD, Calif. - A violent Fourth of July in Hayward left two victims dead and at least 12 hurt in separate incidents over a 12-hour period.

"The amount of calls of service that we had was just unprecedented, not just because it was the Fourth of July," said Officer Cassondra Fovel, a Hayward police spokeswoman. "We had a lot of shooting incidents, we had a stabbing and we really relied on resources outside our jurisdiction as well."

The first homicide happened in a shopping center parking lot on West Tennyson at about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday. A man was found dead with numerous stab wounds.

Then, at about 10:15 p.m., at least two shooters opened fire on Ranker Place near Manon Avenue. Six people were shot, two of whom suffered critical injuries.

"So the interesting thing about Ranker Place is that we had six different victims, one of which is actually someone we believe was also a shooter," Fovel said.

At 11:25 p.m., a man was shot in the shoulder after getting caught in a rolling gun battle during a sideshow on Folsom Avenue. KTVU has learned at least one shooter fired rounds typically used in AR-15 rifles.

Just five minutes after that, during another sideshow incident, a man was shot and killed near Miami Avenue and Florida Street. Two other victims were shot and wounded and two were hit by a car.

"When we have situations like this, it's really sad. So it's really disappointing," said Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas. He said officers were prepared to go after illegal fireworks on the Fourth of July, but that all the violence diverted police resources.

"I've lived in Hayward my whole life. I don't think we've ever had anything like this ever in the city of Hayward," Salinas said. "It hurts. I think it hurts the city."
